about

The Wretched Mathildas is a duo based in Muskoka, Ontario. Singer-songwriters Bet Smith and Cody Thompson started playing together in 2014. Having grown up in the same town and attended the same high school, Cody and Bet were but acquaintances for over ten years, until Bet came across a YouTube video of Cody singing a country song in his kitchen and asked him to try out some collaborations.

With his enormous voice and magnificent range, Cody Thompson - a carpenter by day - discovered an innate talent for song and performance in his early youth. In recent years, Thompson has fronted an indie-rock band, The Abu Dabis, a Toronto-based band that has showcased at downtown hot spots, The Mod Club and The Supermarket. On his own, Cody has snatched up the hearts of audiences since his humble beginnings, earning a standing ovation for a talent-show performance in elementary school and years later, winning star-search contest in Muskoka along with a number of other awards and acclamations. Thompson has opened shows for CMA award winners, Doc Walker and Juno award-winners, The Stampeders when the bands toured through Muskoka.

Bet Smith has been performing original tunes on stage since her early teens, working her way up from bedroom floor to school gymnasium to the locals stage at Mariposa Folk Festival within the first year of picking up the guitar. Bet's recent EP, Loose Ends has earned acclaim internationally through music blog sites and rotation on CBC Radio One and Radio 2, and on over twenty college and community stations throughout Canada. Bet's tour dates have included sets at Salmon Arm's Roots & Blues Festival, Islands Folk Festival in Duncan, BC, and regular performances on Via Rail's cross-country train, The Canadian. Best-loved for her passionate singing and clever turns of phrase, Smith has made many a grown man cry, and many a devilish old man flirt inappropriately.
Betty Smith also has a real job as a welder and craftsperson between Toronto and Muskoka.
